UAE tax certificate

How to get a UAE tax certificate in 2025

Key takeaways

  • UAE tax certificate most often means a tax residency certificate, but can also mean VAT or corporate tax certificates.
  • Residency certificates are issued per year through EmaraTax and support treaty claims abroad.
  • Corporate tax and VAT certificates come after you register for those taxes.
  • Strong residency evidence and clean accounts prevent delays.

A UAE tax certificate is a document that proves your tax position in the Emirates for a given period. Global founders, SMEs, and groups with cross border income often need it before they can claim treaty benefits abroad, open certain overseas bank accounts, or satisfy foreign auditors. Because the UAE now runs VAT and corporate tax alongside a modern residency framework, the phrase can point to more than one certificate. This guide explains what each certificate is, who can apply, and how the process works in real life.

Why international businesses ask for a UAE tax certificate

The UAE has signed many double taxation agreements. When you want a reduced withholding rate or a tax exemption under one of these treaties, the foreign tax authority normally asks for an official certificate from the UAE confirming your residency for that year. The same request comes up for dividend flows, interest payments, royalty income, and exit proceeds on overseas assets.

Outside treaties, the certificate is used as simple proof of where you are taxed. Payment processors, brokers, and lenders may ask for it to confirm your tax home. In practice, it becomes part of your compliance pack, especially if you are a mobile founder or you run a holding structure.

The two meanings of a UAE tax certificate

In everyday use, UAE tax certificate usually means one of two things.

First, a UAE tax residency certificate, also known as a tax domicile certificate. This is issued by the Federal Tax Authority through the EmaraTax portal and confirms that an individual or company was a UAE tax resident in a stated financial year.

Second, a tax registration certificate. The most common ones are VAT registration certificates and corporate tax registration certificates. These confirm that your business is registered for a specific UAE tax and has a tax registration number.

Most overseas counterparties mean the first type, so that is the main focus below. If you are unsure which one you need, Aston VIP can clarify your position through its tax consultancy service.

UAE tax certificate and what it proves

A tax residency certificate shows that you met the UAE tax residence rules for a chosen year. It is not a visa, not a trade licence, and not a bank letter. It is a formal tax status document, and the year printed on it must align with the year your foreign authority is reviewing.

For companies, it supports the view that the company is managed and controlled from the UAE and has genuine economic presence here. For individuals, it supports the idea that your main home and centre of life were in the UAE during that year.

Who can apply in 2026

The Federal Tax Authority issues residency certificates to natural persons and juridical persons that satisfy the UAE tax residence tests. In late 2024 the Authority published a new procedures guide and moved all applications to the EmaraTax platform. The rules have stayed broadly steady in 2026, but reviewers have become stricter about evidence that matches the year requested.

Individuals usually qualify by staying in the UAE for at least 183 days in a twelve month period. Some people qualify under alternative tests such as habitual residence or centre of financial interests, but those routes need stronger proof.

Companies qualify where they are incorporated in the UAE or effectively managed here, hold a valid licence, and can show real substance such as premises, staff or contractors, and decision making based in the Emirates. If you are still exploring the mainland versus free zone route, Aston VIP’s business in Dubai guide gives a useful overview of the key setup choices and compliance expectations.

Evidence individuals should prepare

Before you start your online form, gather these documents as PDFs.

Your passport, Emirates ID, and residence visa.

A UAE entry and exit report for the requested year.

A UAE address tied to you, usually a tenancy contract or title deed.

Six months or more of personal bank statements that cover everyday living. For treaty use, some applications may need fewer statements, but having a full trail helps.

If you are employed, add a salary certificate or contract. If you are self employed, add proof of business activity.

Evidence companies should prepare

Most successful corporate applications include a tidy compliance file.

A current trade licence, incorporation documents, and shareholder register.

A lease agreement or flexi desk contract showing your UAE premises.

Audited or management financial statements for the requested year.

Corporate bank statements covering six to twelve months.

A corporate tax registration number if the company is a taxable person.

Free zone companies often need audits earlier than they expect. If your finance trail is still light, Aston VIP accounting and bookkeeping support can get you audit ready before you apply.

"A tax residency certificate confirms that you were a UAE tax resident during a specified financial year and can be used to claim treaty benefits abroad. "

How the EmaraTax portal works

All tax certificates are requested on EmaraTax. You sign in with UAE Pass, open Issuance of tax certificates, then choose Tax residency certificate. If you already use EmaraTax for VAT or corporate tax, you will see the service under your current profile. Otherwise, create a profile first.

The portal lets you track progress, upload extra evidence when asked, pay the relevant fees, and download the certificate once approved.

Step by step application for individuals

Log in to your EmaraTax profile.

Select Tax residency certificate and choose the purpose. The portal offers a DTA option for treaty use and an other purposes option.

Enter your personal details, the financial year, and the country where you will present the certificate.

Upload your documents and pay the submission fee of AED 50.

Wait for the review. If the Authority needs more evidence, you will be prompted in the portal.

After approval, pay the processing fee. In 2026 it is usually AED 500 where you already have a UAE tax registration number and about AED 1,000 where you do not. A printed copy is optional and costs AED 250 if you need a paper version to lodge overseas.

Once fees are settled, you download the electronic certificate directly from the portal. Check the spelling of your name, passport number, and the certificate year before you share it, because foreign authorities rarely accept amendments after you file.

Step by step application for companies

Log into the company profile in EmaraTax.

Select Tax residency certificate, choose the purpose, and enter the requested year.

Complete the entity details, including trade licence number, address, and authorised signatory.

Upload the corporate documents, accounts, lease, and bank statements.

Pay the AED 50 submission fee and respond to any follow up queries.

After approval, pay the processing fee. Companies with a corporate tax registration number usually pay around AED 500, while companies without one pay a higher fee that can reach AED 1,750.

Download the certificate. It is valid for one year from the issue date, so you reapply for every year you need.

Using your certificate abroad

Most foreign authorities accept the electronic PDF as issued, but some banks or tax offices ask for an attested hard copy. If you need that, request the printed version in EmaraTax and allow extra courier time. A clear scan of the stamped certificate helps when a counterparty insists on physical signatures for internal checks only. Check whether your target country wants the certificate legalised or translated. The UAE normally issues TRCs in English and Arabic, so translation is uncommon, but legalisation can be required in a few jurisdictions. Plan this early if your overseas filing deadline is close.

How long it takes and why requests stall

Straightforward individual requests are often cleared within a few working days once the file is complete. Corporate requests may take longer because reviewers check accounts, premises, and management evidence.

The common stalling points are missing entry exit reports, addresses that do not match the tenancy contract, bank statements that stop too early, and corporate files without audited accounts. Another frequent issue is selecting the wrong country or year on the form, so double check those fields before you submit.

A quick pre review of your paperwork usually prevents these issues. If you are applying for multiple years, raise a separate request for each year rather than uploading everything into one file.

"After approval, you must pay the processing fee within 30 business days or the application is cancelled. "

If you travel a lot

Many founders spend months outside the UAE while still running UAE based businesses. If you want a residency certificate, your travel pattern must still add up to the residency tests for that year. Keep your entry exit report aligned with your bank trail. If you rely on an alternative test instead of the 183 day count, be ready to show a permanent UAE home and that your key personal or financial interests are centred here.

Planning ahead so the certificate is easy later

Evidence is easiest to build over time. Maintain a real UAE address, keep your accounts active with normal transactions, and save copies of leases, meeting minutes, and financial statements. For companies, ensure decisions are documented as being taken in the UAE.

One easy way to stay aligned is to set expectations at setup stage. If you are planning a holding SPV or a cross border trading entity, consider a jurisdiction such as ADGM where substance rules and corporate governance align well with treaty use. Aston VIP’s advantages of setting up in ADGM gives a clear overview.

Clearing up common myths

A visa alone does not make you tax resident. Evidence of days and life in the UAE still matters.

A free zone licence does not automatically qualify a company either. Substance and management tests apply even where the corporate tax rate is zero. If you want a deeper explanation of how treaty planning and corporate tax interact, Aston VIP’s guide to withholding tax myths in the UAE is a strong next read.

A certificate is not issued for future years. You can only request years where your evidence already exists.

Corporate tax and VAT registration certificates

If a counterparty asks for proof that your company is registered for a UAE tax, they are referring to a tax registration certificate, not the residency certificate.

A corporate tax registration certificate confirms you are registered for corporate tax on EmaraTax and shows your corporate tax registration number and tax period details. Registration is required for taxable persons, including many free zone entities.

A VAT registration certificate confirms you are registered to charge VAT. VAT registration becomes mandatory once taxable turnover exceeds AED 375,000 in a rolling twelve months. Voluntary registration begins at AED 187,500.

You can download both certificates from EmaraTax once registration is approved. These certificates are often shared with clients, suppliers, and local banks, while the residency certificate is typically shared overseas.

When you might need both certificates

International groups often need a residency certificate for treaty claims and registration certificates for domestic compliance. For example, a UAE holding company receiving foreign dividends might share its residency certificate with the foreign payer while showing its corporate tax registration certificate to local banks.
